Ahhhh people need to watch this drama <3 <3 <3
Since it was lamentably a Queen In Hyun’s Man-less week for me (I’m having a hell of a time finding matching softsubs/raws that work, long story) I decided to try out one of the 4 Taiwanese dramas I downloaded in the last few weeks (3 of which are Jiro Wang titles*, my renewed interested being due to Absolute Boyfriend after all). 2010’s Down With Love, I’m happy to say, is much better than my other few T-Drama experiences, i.e. forcing myself to finish Magicians of Love and dropping Smiling Pasta at like ep.05. DWL is about a freeter-type (Ella as Yang Guo) who pretends to be a lesbian so she can work as a nanny for the niece & nephew of the (seemingly) emotionally distant lawyer Yu Ping (Jerry Yan), who is tired of the help constantly falling for him. At first I thought the only thing I’d like about DWL is the awesome Kimura-esque hair that Yu Ping is sporting. Yang Guo’s seemingly constant mugging, along with the other things that bothered me— Hui Fan’s (Yu Ping’s ex) annoying obviously-dubbed-in-post voice, the huge spoilers in the show’s opening credits (I have no doubt they’ll end up getting together but do you have to show me the kissing scenes in the OP!?), the fact that I kept dozing off in ep.01— made me almost drop it right away. But hell, Jerry Yan is handsome so I gave it another chance and found myself actually liking it. I may be cheating a little though because I learned it’s much more enjoyable when I flip the video to double-speed during the long, boring parts where Hui Fan keeps harping about, “Why doesn’t Yu Ping like me anymore?” (he’s not the wishy-washy drama hero who won’t come out and say it when the relationship is over; he’s told her they’re through in no uncertain terms numerous times so her character ends up being irritating and almost stalker-like). And after a while either Ella’s toned down her mugging or I’ve just gotten used to it because it’s not bothering me nearly as much as it did in the beginning. So I’m going to say that my reintroduction to the world of T-Dramas has started on a relatively good foot at this point.
